New Delhi: The growing diplomatic and sporting tensions between India and Bangladesh are now clearly impacting the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Bangladesh's interim government has decided to ban the broadcast of the IPL in the country. This decision was confirmed by the Bangladesh Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. IPL 2026 is scheduled to begin in March, but a major controversy has already erupted.

Mustafizur Rahman controversy sparks controversy

The root of this entire controversy is Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. Following BCCI instructions, IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders dropped Mustafizur from the team. KKR had acquired him for ₹9.20 crore in the recent mini-auction.

Even before this decision, protests had erupted in India over Mustafizur's inclusion. Several political leaders and storytellers even targeted KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan.

Bangladesh Government Takes Tough Stance

Mustafizur's exclusion from the team sparked outrage and anger in Bangladesh. Bangladesh's interim Sports Minister, Asif Nazrul, had previously hinted that a suspension of IPL broadcasts was being considered. Following this, the Bangladesh Ministry of Information and Broadcasting formally announced that the broadcast of all IPL matches and related programming in Bangladesh would be suspended until further notice.

Conflict Over T20 World Cup

Before the IPL, Bangladesh made another major decision. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has made it clear that it will not send its team to India for the T20 World Cup. The board has requested the ICC to relocate its matches to Sri Lanka. However, the ICC has not yet made a final decision on this matter.

Bangladesh was scheduled to play most of its league matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai, but the current situation has raised questions about the entire schedule.
