Azam Khan and son Abdullah convicted in dual PAN Card case

Rampur: Monday brought a major legal setback for senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and his son and former MLA Mohammad Abdullah Azam. The Special MP/MLA Magistrate Court in Rampur convicted both of them in the two PAN card scam. This verdict is being considered a significant turning point in the case filed in 2019.

What is the matter?

The case was registered in December 2019 after BJP MLA Akash Saxena filed a complaint at the Civil Lines police station. According to Saxena, Abdullah Azam obtained two PAN cards based on two different birth dates and used them for bank accounts, income tax, and election processes.

According to the allegations:

One PAN card showed his date of birth as January 1, 1993, while the other showed September 30, 1990.

After completing the investigation, the police filed a charge sheet against Abdullah Azam in the court. Azam Khan was named as a co-accused in the case for criminal conspiracy.

Conviction in Court, Both Taken into Custody

On Monday, after the completion of the hearing, the judge convicted both of them under sections of fraud, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam were taken into custody in the court immediately after the verdict.

BJP MLA Akash Saxena, also present in the court, said that this was a "victory for justice in the legal battle."

When will the sentence be announced?

After convicting both of them, the court has begun hearing on the sentence. It is expected that the court will announce the sentence soon. The maximum sentence in this case is up to seven years.

Trouble Again Two Months After Release from Jail

Azam Khan was released on bail from Sitapur jail on September 23. He had been released after receiving relief in several previous cases, but now this new verdict has increased his troubles.

Following their conviction, there is a growing fear that Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam may have to go to jail once again.
