In view of the increase in Covid cases in the state, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a high-level meeting on May 22. The chief minister has directed the health department to speed up the process of monitoring and testing.

Rapidly spreading JN.1 variant

According to health experts, the JN.1 sub-variant may have a role in the cases currently reported. It is a variant of Omicron's BA.2.86 strain, which first appeared in August 2023. In December 2023, the WHO declared it a 'variant of interest.'

JN.1 has about 30 mutations

JN.1 has about 30 mutations, which make it more contagious than other variants. Although experts say that this variant does not cause more serious illness, it can weaken immunity. Its symptoms can last from several days to weeks, and in some cases there may be a risk of long COVID.

If symptoms appear, get tested immediately

The health department has appealed to the people not to panic but not to be careless. If anyone shows symptoms like fever, cold, cough, or sore throat, contact the doctor immediately and get the COVID test done. It is advisable to wear a mask and maintain hand hygiene in crowded places.
