Mathura: Ten dead, several missing as boat capsizes in Yamuna river; Search operation underway

Ten devotees died and several remain missing after a boat capsized in the Yamuna in Mathura. Rescue teams, including NDRF divers, are searching the river as strong currents are suspected behind the incident.

Mathura: At least 10 people have died and several others are feared missing after a boat capsized in the Yamuna River near Vrindavan, officials said.

The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Vrindavan Kotwali police station, where a steamer carrying around 30 passengers overturned near Shringar Ghat. Authorities fear that many may have drowned in the accident.

Confirming the casualties, District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh said, “Ten people have died, while several others are missing after a tourist boat capsized in the Yamuna in Mathura.”

Chief Minister Expresses Grief

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences over the loss of lives and directed officials to ensure swift rescue and relief measures.

He also instructed authorities to provide proper medical care to the injured and assistance to affected families.

Devotees from Punjab on Board

Police said the boat was carrying around 30 devotees from Ludhiana who had travelled to Mathura-Vrindavan for religious purposes. The group was part of a larger gathering of about 150 pilgrims visiting the region.

Collision with Pontoon Bridge

According to officials, the boat capsized after colliding with a pontoon bridge near KC Ghat. Strong currents in the river are believed to have contributed to the accident.

The impact caused the boat to lose balance and overturn, throwing passengers into the water.

Rescue Operation in Progress

Teams from the police, divers, and the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed at the site. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate those still missing.

Officials Rush to Spot

Senior officials, including police and administrative teams, reached the spot soon after the incident. Search operations are being carried out across the affected area.

Authorities have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to rescue the missing and provide treatment to the injured.
