New Delhi: Reports of children's deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after consuming cough syrup have sparked a nationwide uproar. The CDSCO has launched an investigation into 19 types of medicines in six states. Initial reports indicate that some syrups contain a toxic chemical called diethylene glycol (DEG), which damages the kidneys and nervous system. The sale of these syrups, manufactured in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, has been banned.
Rajasthan's Leader of the Opposition, Tikaram Julie, accused the government of refusing to acknowledge the deaths. The central government has issued instructions not to give cough and cold medicines to children under two years of age.
The Uttarakhand government has also launched raids on medical stores and wholesale drug dealers. A joint team of the Health Department and the FDA is taking samples of the syrups and conducting tests to confirm adulteration.
The government and health department are taking strict measures to protect children in this serious matter.
