New Delhi: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has appointed William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition. The move comes shortly after the departure of Pieter Elbers, who stepped down ahead of completing his tenure.
The airline confirmed that Walsh, a globally recognised figure in aviation, will steer the company through its next phase of growth.

Walsh brings decades of experience in the aviation industry. He previously served as CEO of British Airways and later led International Airlines Group, which oversees multiple international carriers. He is currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association.
Industry observers believe his expertise in managing complex airline operations and global networks will play a crucial role in strengthening IndiGo’s position in a competitive aviation market.
IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta expressed confidence in Walsh’s leadership, describing him as a seasoned professional with a strong track record. He noted that Walsh’s appointment signals a new chapter for the airline as it continues to expand in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation sectors.
Responding to his appointment, Walsh said he was excited to lead IndiGo and build on its existing strengths. He highlighted the airline’s strong operational base and praised its workforce for professionalism and commitment.
He also pointed to the rapidly evolving aviation landscape, adding that IndiGo is well-positioned to adapt and grow. Walsh emphasised his focus on fostering innovation, collaboration, and long-term value creation.

The leadership change follows the resignation of Pieter Elbers, who stepped down nearly 18 months before the end of his term. His exit came after widespread flight disruptions in late 2025 that left thousands of passengers stranded across India and abroad.
The cancellations were reportedly linked to a shortage of pilots, triggered by revised flight duty time regulations. The incident drew sharp criticism and highlighted operational challenges within the airline.
With Walsh at the helm, IndiGo is expected to focus on stabilising operations while pursuing expansion. The airline’s next steps will be closely watched as it navigates both domestic demand and increasing international competition.
