Dhaka: At least three people were killed and dozens injured as violent clashes broke out on Sunday in Bangladesh's southeastern hill district of Khagrachhari between tribal groups and Bengali settlers, despite heavy security following the alleged assault of a tribal schoolgirl earlier in the week.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among the indigenous tribal communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, a region historically sensitive due to ethnic tensions between tribal groups and Bengali settlers. Protestors blocked roads, burned tires, and staged sit-ins, demanding swift justice regarding the incident with the minor.
As per the police officials the death of three men has been confirmed. The police has informed this without elaborating much on their identities.
Residents and witnesses said both feuding sides turned violent, setting ablaze each other's businesses and households in Khagrachhari hill district, some 270 kilometres northeast of Dhaka on the motorway. The situation quickly escalated into violent clashes between protesters and police.

The clashes occurred following an alleged assault of an eighth-grade schoolgirl in Khagrachhari district, one of the three hill districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts bordering India and Myanmar.
The girl was assaulted on her way from a private tuition and was reportedly found by her parents and neighbours around midnight in an unconscious state in an isolated area in the town.

The victim is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Meanwhile, police arrested a Bengali teenager with military assistance. He is among one of the suspects to be involved in the assault and is now being interrogated on a six-day remand on a court order.
The home ministry in Dhaka said 13 army personnel and three policemen were injured in the violence.
Khagrachhari’s deputy commissioner described the situation as tense but under control, noting that additional paramilitary forces had been deployed to prevent further violence. “We are investigating both the assault case and the clashes that followed. Those responsible will be held accountable,” he said.
