New Delhi: An Air India captain in his 40s was found dead inside a hotel room in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj, police said on Saturday. The pilot, who was based in Mumbai, was staying at the hotel during a layover and was scheduled to operate a flight the following morning.
The incident came to light after his brother contacted the hotel staff and informed them that the captain was not responding to repeated phone calls.
According to police officials, the hotel management informed Vasant Kunj North police station about the incident on Friday. A police team reached the spot and found the room locked from inside.
Officials said the hotel manager opened the door using a master key, following which the pilot was found unconscious inside the room. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said the exact cause of death would be confirmed after the postmortem report. Police have started inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The deceased captain had earlier worked with Air India Express and had joined Air India a few months ago. The airline said it was deeply saddened by the incident and confirmed that the pilot was scheduled to operate an early morning flight on Saturday.
Air India said it was in contact with the pilot’s family and providing all possible support during this difficult time.
The police investigation is currently underway, and further details are expected after the postmortem examination report.
