New Delhi: A clash between Turkish police and Islamic State militants took place in northwestern Turkey on Monday. ​​Three police officers and six Islamic State militants were killed in the violent confrontation.

Turkey's Interior Minister said at least eight other police officers and one other person were wounded in the clash. He said the shootout occurred in the Elmali district of Yalova province, south of Istanbul, when police raided a house where the militants were hiding.

Turkey Continues Crackdown on ISIS
He said special forces were sent from the neighboring Bursa province to reinforce the operation against the ISIS militants. According to private news channel NTV, five schools in the area were closed for the day as the fighting spilled into the streets.

Authorities also cut off natural gas and electricity supplies as a precaution, while civilians and vehicles were prevented from entering the area. Last week, police conducted simultaneous raids and detained 115 suspected members of the extremist group.

ISIS Attack in 2017 Killed 39 People
The detained militants were accused of planning attacks targeting Christmas and New Year's celebrations. Authorities said the group had called for attacks during the festivities, specifically against non-Muslims.

ISIS has carried out several deadly attacks in Turkey in recent years, including a shooting at a nightclub in Istanbul during New Year's celebrations on January 1, 2017, which killed 39 people.
