New Delhi: Many of us swallow medicines with milk or tea out of laziness or haste. But is this the right way? According to science and medical science, taking most medicines with milk or tea can reduce their effect or sometimes even be harmful. However, there are some medicines that are beneficial to take with milk, but taking medicine with tea is not recommended at all.

Disadvantages of taking medicine with milk

Milk contains elements like calcium, magnesium, protein, and fat, which react chemically with some medicines and reduce their effect.

Antibiotics (such as tetracycline and ciprofloxacin)—The calcium present in milk combines with these medicines to form a complex that is not absorbed properly in the body. This can reduce the effect of the medicine by 50-80%.

Iron supplements—Milk prevents the absorption of iron, due to which anemia patients are unable to get the benefit.

Thyroid medicines (such as levothyroxine)—These medicines do not work properly when taken with milk or calcium-containing things.

Osteoporosis medicines—These should also not be taken with milk or juice, as it reduces their effect.

Some medicines that can be taken with milk

  • Paracetamol (painkiller)
  • Vitamin D or calcium supplements
  • Some antacids

Why is it dangerous to take medicine with tea?

Tea contains elements called caffeine and tannin, which affect the effect of medicines.

Antidepressants—Taking them with tea can increase anxiety, restlessness, or insomnia.

Antibiotics (quinolone group)—Caffeine slows down the metabolism of these medicines, which can increase side effects.

Herbal teas are also harmful—many herbal teas can also react with medicines and increase heart rate or blood pressure.

What is the best way?

Always take medicines with plain water, as water does not react chemically with medicines.

If you have to drink milk or tea, drink it 1-2 hours after taking the medicine.

It is important to take medicines in the right way to get the full benefit of them. Avoid taking medicines with milk or tea; otherwise, they may be less effective or may cause unwanted side effects. The safest option is plain water!
