Kidney inflammation often goes unnoticed
New Delhi: Kidney inflammation, medically known as Nephritis, refers to swelling and irritation of kidney tissues that can affect their ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the body. The condition can arise due to infections, autoimmune disorders, or underlying health issues.
If left untreated, it may lead to serious complications, including impaired kidney function.
One of the most common signs of kidney inflammation is swelling, also called edema. This typically appears in the face, hands, feet, or around the eyes. Unlike normal weight gain, this swelling is caused by fluid retention due to the kidneys’ reduced ability to remove excess fluid.

The swelling may develop gradually and is often more noticeable in the morning, especially around the eyes.
Apart from swelling, individuals may experience a range of symptoms that indicate kidney-related issues. These include fatigue, decreased urine output, dark or foamy urine, and in some cases, high blood pressure.
Some people may also notice discomfort in the lower back or sides, where the kidneys are located. These symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition.
Kidney inflammation can be triggered by infections, certain medications, or autoimmune diseases such as Lupus. Conditions like diabetes and hypertension can also increase the risk of kidney damage over time.
Early diagnosis is essential, as prolonged inflammation can lead to chronic kidney disease.

Doctors stress that swelling should not be dismissed as simple weight gain, especially if it is persistent or accompanied by other symptoms. Timely medical evaluation, including blood and urine tests, can help identify the underlying cause.
Medical attention is advised if swelling persists, worsens, or is associated with other warning signs such as reduced urination or fatigue. Early treatment can prevent complications and improve outcomes.
Recognising these symptoms and seeking timely care can play a crucial role in protecting kidney health.
