Paris: French wild card Lois Boisson sent Court Philippe-Chatrier into raptures on Monday evening with a stunning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over third seed Jessica Pegula, delivering the biggest upset of the tournament so far at Roland-Garros 2025, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
Earlier in the day, second seed Coco Gauff powered into her fifth consecutive French Open quarterfinal with a commanding 6-0, 7-5 win over 20th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, further solidifying her credentials as a title contender.
In a pulsating night session that stretched to 2 hours and 40 minutes, Boisson, ranked No.361 in the world, overcame early nerves and a one-set deficit to shock the American favourite amid a deafening home atmosphere. The 22-year-old clinched the decisive break in a marathon ninth game of the final set, converting her fourth break point to lead 5-4.
The drama didn’t end there. Serving for the match, Boisson had to stave off four break points as Pegula threw everything at her in a tense final game. But the young Frenchwoman held her nerve to cross the finish line and set up a fairytale quarterfinal clash with teenager Mirra Andreeva on Wednesday.
Boisson’s triumph marked the first time a Frenchwoman ranked outside the top 350 has reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal in the Open Era.
Meanwhile, Gauff was clinical in her straight-sets win over Alexandrova earlier in the day. The 21-year-old American raced through the opening set in just over half an hour, showcasing her superior clay-court movement and tactical variety.
Though Alexandrova mounted a late challenge in the second set, Gauff weathered the storm with maturity and composure, closing out the match with minimal fuss.
Gauff, who has now notched 15 wins on clay this season, became the youngest player since Venus Williams in 2001 to reach five quarterfinals at the same Slam, and only the fourth-youngest to do so at Roland-Garros in the Open Era.
"I think I played well the whole match. She stepped it up in the second and hit some incredible shots. But I stayed focused," Gauff said in her post-match press conference.
Gauff will face the winner of the all-American duel between Madison Keys and Hailey Baptiste in the quarterfinals. (With inputs from agencies)
