Kash Patel faces criticism
New Delhi: FBI Director Kash Patel is facing scrutiny over alleged misuse of government resources, after reports emerged that he travels in armored BMW X5 vehicles and had sought a private jet for official use.
Traditionally, senior FBI officials travel in Chevrolet Suburban vehicles. Patel reportedly requested a fleet upgrade to armored BMW X5s, which the FBI purchased.
FBI Clarifies Purchase
FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson confirmed the acquisition of the BMW X5s, explaining that the agency is upgrading its vehicle fleet. He added that the purchase was a cost-effective alternative to other options, though the exact number of vehicles was not disclosed.
“Upgrading vehicles used by federal agents is standard practice,” Williamson said. “All federal agencies make fleet changes based on operational and budget considerations.”
The armored BMW X5s are built to withstand AK-47 fire and feature steel and ballistic glass shielding. Despite these specifications, critics have called the purchase an unnecessary expense.
Private Jet Request Shelved
Patel was also reportedly pushing for a private jet, but the plan was put on hold due to its high estimated cost of $90–115 million. The new BMW X5s cost approximately $480,000 each—almost double the price of a Chevrolet Suburban.
The controversy has ignited public debate over resource use and accountability within federal agencies.
