In response to Trump’s 100% tariffs over rare earth export curbs, China avoided immediate retaliation, calling the move hypocritical. While tensions rise, Beijing’s mild response hints at keeping negotiations open amid a growing US-China trade technology standoff.
China Calls Trump’s Tariffs Hypocritical
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump recently announced new import tariffs of up to 100% on products from China. This move was taken in response to China's new restrictions on the export of rare earth elements and related equipment.
Trump also stated that the US would also impose controls on the export of certain critical software starting November 1. In response, China on Sunday called Trump's actions hypocritical and justified its restrictions.
However, China refrained from imposing new tariffs against the US, indicating that it wants to keep the path open for dialogue.
Trump slams China’s Rare Earth export curbs, warns of economic retaliation
China's Ministry of Commerce clarified that its new restrictions are not a complete ban on exports. If any exports are for civilian use and comply with regulations, they will be permitted. China also stated that it will strive to facilitate trade through general licenses and exemptions.
China plays another strategic move to pounce USA
This was intended to reassure foreign companies concerned about China's new restrictions, as China produces more than 90% of the world's processed rare earths. These elements are used in highly technical materials such as electric vehicles, aircraft engines, and military radars.
No retaliatory tariffs have been issued by China so far, but analysts believe that China may now pressure the US through other policy measures. For example: Blocking or complicating the sale of TikTok, increasing anti-trust scrutiny of US companies.
Recently, China's market regulator (SAMR) accused US company Qualcomm of acquiring an Israeli chip designer company (Autotalks) without informing China.
Experts believe that China's mild response this time (such as not imposing retaliatory tariffs) indicates that it still wants to keep the possibility of negotiations alive. This could potentially reduce tensions between the two countries.
However, some analysts also say that if China does not respond to Trump's tariffs, it could signal that it no longer trusts Trump's words and promises.
China makes an astute move before Xi and Trump meet, curbs export of rare earth minerals
This new chapter in the trade war between the US and China revolves around rare earth elements, tariffs, and control of technology companies. Both countries are strategically protecting their respective interests, but China's mild response this time also raises the possibility of dialogue. It will be important to see in the future whether this conflict will escalate into negotiations or escalate further.
