Iran Targets Tanker With 12 Indians Onboard (Representational Image)
New Delhi: On April 25, an incident involving gunfire directed at the chemical tanker MT Siron was reported near Oman. The vessel was situated near the outer port area of Shinas when the Iranian Coast Guard fired warning shots.
There were 12 Indian crew members on board the vessel. It comes as a relief that all Indian nationals have been reported to be completely safe. The government is closely monitoring the entire situation.
The tanker was a Togo-flagged vessel and was proceeding through the waters alongside other ships. It was during this transit that the Iranian Coast Guard fired warning shots, thereby escalating tensions in the region.
Mandeep Singh Randhawa provided details regarding this incident during a press briefing. He stated that while the incident is serious in nature, the fact that the Indian crew remains safe is the greatest source of relief.
This incident has occurred at a time when tensions in the Gulf region are already running high. Such incidents could heighten concerns regarding international maritime security and trade.
