New Delhi: A series of coordinated attacks in Mali has heightened security concerns after armed groups targeted multiple locations, including areas close to the capital, Bamako.

The assaults, reportedly carried out by militants linked to Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and Tuareg rebel factions, mark one of the most significant escalations in recent years.

Multiple targets hit in coordinated strikes

According to reports, attackers struck military installations, gold mining regions, and key strategic sites almost simultaneously. One of the primary targets was a military base in Kati, located near Bamako, which is considered a crucial defence facility.

The scale and coordination of the attacks suggest a planned operation aimed at testing the country’s security apparatus and expanding militant reach beyond remote regions.

Reports of Defence Minister’s death

Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed during the assault near the Kati base. It is reported that his residence was also targeted in the attack.

However, there has been no official confirmation from the Malian government regarding his death or the overall number of casualties. Authorities are still assessing the situation as information continues to emerge.

Attacks near capital raise alarm

The proximity of the attacks to Bamako has raised serious concerns. Militants in Mali have traditionally operated in northern and rural areas, but these strikes near the capital indicate a shift in strategy.

Security analysts say the ability of armed groups to launch coordinated assaults in high-security zones points to evolving tactics and possible gaps in intelligence and preparedness.

Ongoing conflict in Mali

Mali has been grappling with instability for years, with armed Islamist groups and separatist movements posing persistent challenges to the state. The country is currently governed by a military-led administration.

The main threats include the al-Qaeda-linked JNIM network and Tuareg rebel groups seeking greater autonomy in northern Mali. Their activities have contributed to prolonged unrest and weakened state control in several regions.
