New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has issued a notice to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remarks describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist.” Kharge has been asked to respond within 24 hours, with officials confirming that the poll body has taken a “serious view” of the statement.

The action follows a formal complaint by a BJP delegation that included Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiren Rijiju, and Arjun Ram Meghwal. The Election Commission earlier this week, urging it to take the “strictest possible action” against Kharge.

Speaking after the meeting, Sitharaman criticized the Congress leader’s language, calling it “highly condemnable,” especially given his position as Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. Rijiju also denounced the remark, labeling it a “disgusting act” and demanding both disciplinary action and a public apology from Kharge and his party.

The controversy stems from Kharge’s speech on Tuesday, where he accused the Prime Minister of “terrorising” opposition parties through the alleged misuse of government agencies and institutions. While Kharge later clarified his comments, the BJP has maintained that his choice of words was unacceptable and warranted action.

The Election Commission’s notice marks a significant escalation in the political row, with attention now on Kharge’s response and whether further action will follow.
