Islamabad: Early Sunday morning, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) carried out an airstrike on Matre Dara village in the Tirah Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attack occurred around 2 a.m., when most people were asleep. At least 30 civilians, including women and children, were killed in the attack. Locals have described it as a "massacre."

Objective and outcome of the attack

According to sources, the operation was aimed at targeting Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants. However, no militants have been confirmed killed or injured so far. Instead, the areas attacked were entirely residential. Bombs dropped in densely populated areas destroyed dozens of homes.

Weapons and tactics used

According to intelligence reports, Chinese-made JF-17 Thunder fighter jets and LS-6 precision glide bombs were used in the attack. The LS-6 is a precision-guided bomb, making it clear that the attack was deliberate and not accidental. The attack was carried out using modern technology, but it resulted in civilian casualties.

Local Reaction and Protest

The situation in Matre Dara village was horrific after the attack—bodies lay everywhere, cattle were dead, and houses were reduced to rubble. The local Akakhel tribe called a jirga (traditional tribal meeting), deciding that women would be buried, while the bodies of men and children would be placed outside the Corps Commander's house in protest.

A sit-in has begun at Khyber Chowk. People have accused the Islamabad government of killing innocent people under the guise of counter-terrorism operations.

Human Rights Violations and Reaction

Human rights experts have called this action a violation of international law. They believe it constitutes war crimes and raises serious questions about the Pakistan Army's actions in tribal areas. Public outrage is also being expressed on social media. Many Pashtun activists and elders have called this a tactic of "ethnic cleansing."

Future Concerns

Intelligence agencies have warned that such brutal attacks could fuel resentment within the Pashtun community. This could fuel anti-state militancy and threaten Pakistan's social and internal unity.
