Donald Trump announces steep tariffs on medicines, furniture, trucks, and home goods to curb imports, strengthen U.S. manufacturing, and influence global trade relations, including ties with India.
Trump Boosts ‘Made in USA’ with Heavy Import Duties
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again made a major announcement regarding tariffs (import duties). He has decided to impose heavy tariffs on several key items to prevent the influx of foreign goods into the US and promote domestic industries. He shared these decisions through his social media platform "Truth."
Trump has announced that, starting October 1, 2025, a 100% import duty will be imposed on branded and patented pharmaceutical products sold in the US. However, this tariff exemption will apply to companies that have established or are in the process of establishing manufacturing units in the US.
This move aims to ensure that pharmaceutical companies manufacture domestically rather than outside the US, thereby increasing employment opportunities.

In another announcement, Trump announced that a 50% tariff will also be imposed on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and other related products. He stated that these products are being imported in large quantities from other countries, impacting US domestic industries.

This step, he said, is necessary for national security and internal economic strength.
Trump also announced that a 30% import duty will now be imposed on furniture products. This is intended to protect the domestic furniture industry from foreign competition.
To protect American-made heavy trucks from foreign competition, Trump announced that a 25% tariff will be imposed on all heavy trucks manufactured in other countries starting October 1, 2025. This will benefit American companies such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, etc., and provide better employment opportunities for truck drivers.
In recent months, trade relations between India and the United States have seen tensions over tariffs. However, now, following the visits of Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to the United States, positive signs are emerging regarding a trade deal between the two countries.

These decisions by Donald Trump clearly indicate his desire to promote 'Made in USA' policies. His aim is to reduce dependence on foreign imports, promote domestic industries, and increase employment opportunities in the United States.
However, these tariffs could also impact global trade, especially America's relations with countries like India.
