Typhoon Bualoi heading towards Vietnam after wreaking havoc in Philippines; Thousands evacuated

New Delhi: Thousands of people were evacuated from central and northern provinces in Vietnam on Sunday due to fears of Typhoon Bualoi. Typhoon Bualoi is rapidly approaching Vietnam and is expected to make landfall by this evening.

According to officials, Typhoon Bualoi has killed at least 20 people in the central Philippines since Friday, most of them from drowning and falling trees. The storm has caused power outages in several towns and cities. Approximately 23,000 families have been forced to evacuate to more than 1,400 emergency shelters.

Winds up to 133 mph
The storm is expected to bring winds of up to 133 kilometers per hour (83 mph), waves over one meter high, and heavy rainfall, which could trigger flash floods and landslides.

Vietnam's weather agency reported that Bualoi was about 200 kilometers (124 miles) east of central Vietnam early Sunday and moving northwest. It is expected to make landfall between Quang Tri and Nghe An provinces.

More than 210,000 people planned to be evacuated
Authorities in northern and central regions have halted fishing boats and ordered people to evacuate. According to state media, Da Nang has planned to evacuate more than 210,000 people, while Hue has prepared to evacuate more than 32,000 coastal residents.

Several flight schedules changed
The Civil Aviation Authority said that operations at four coastal airports, including Danang International Airport, have been suspended and several flights have been rescheduled.

Rain inundates roads in central provinces
Heavy rain has been lashing central provinces since Saturday night. In Hue, flooding submerged low-lying roads, storm surge blew away roofs, and at least one person is reported missing after being swept away by floodwaters. A fishing boat sank in neighboring Quang Tri Province. According to state media, eight people have been rescued, while efforts are underway to reach three others at sea.

Meteorologists have warned of heavy rains until October 1, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides in northern and central provinces.
