New Delhi: Sawan Somwar Vrat is one of the most significant fasts observed by devotees of Lord Shiva during the holy month of Shravan. Every Monday of Sawan, devotees observe a fast, offer prayers, perform Jalabhishek and seek blessings for health, prosperity and happiness. Along with religious rituals, following the right diet is considered an important part of the vrat.

Foods you can eat during Sawan Somwar Vrat

During the fast, devotees generally consume light and satvik food. Fruits such as bananas, apples, papayas, pomegranates and seasonal fruits are commonly eaten. Milk, curd, buttermilk and paneer are also preferred as they help maintain energy levels.

Fasting-friendly ingredients like sabudana, kuttu (buckwheat) flour, singhara (water chestnut) flour, rajgira (amaranth), makhana and boiled potatoes are widely consumed. Dry fruits and nuts, including almonds, walnuts, raisins and cashews, can also be included in moderation. Coconut water, lemon water and fresh fruit juices help keep the body hydrated.

Foods to avoid during the fast

Devotees generally avoid regular wheat flour, rice, pulses and lentils during the vrat. Onion, garlic, meat, eggs, alcohol and processed or junk food are also avoided as they are not considered satvik. Many people also refrain from consuming table salt and instead use sendha namak (rock salt) in fasting meals.

Important fasting rules

Many devotees begin the day with an early bath, wear clean clothes and offer water, milk, bel leaves, dhatura and flowers to Lord Shiva. Chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" and reading or listening to the Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha are considered an integral part of the observance.

Those observing the fast should stay hydrated, avoid overeating during the evening meal and break the fast with simple satvik food after completing the Pooja rituals. Elderly people, children, pregnant women and individuals with medical conditions should consult a doctor before undertaking a strict fast.

Sawan Somwar is observed with faith and devotion, and while fasting practices may vary across regions and families, the emphasis remains on simplicity, discipline and spiritual reflection.
