New Delhi: In today's time, due to changes in lifestyle and negligence towards health, cases of heart attack or cardiac arrest are increasing dangerously among the youth.
The problem, which was once considered a disease of the elderly, is now making youth between the ages of 20 and 40 its victims. Let us understand the main reasons behind this in detail.
Irregular routine and lack of sleep
The biggest price of modern lifestyle is being paid by our sleep and routine. Spending time on a mobile screen till late at night, excessive use of social media, and an irregular schedule completely spoil the natural clock (metabolism) of the body.
Due to this, blood pressure increases, and 'silent killer' diseases like obesity and diabetes start taking birth in the body, which later become the main causes of heart attack.
Physical inactivity and unhealthy diet
Today's youth spend most of their time sitting at a desk or on the phone. Physical activities have become almost negligible. Along with this, the consumption of fast food, processed chips, cold drinks, and oily junk food has made the situation even worse.
Due to these habits, problems like obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance are increasing rapidly, which are directly responsible for heart diseases.
Constant stress and mental pressure
The competition of work, studies, career, or appearance on social media has increased the mental stress of the youth manifold.
Due to this constant stress, the level of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline increases in the body. This hormonal imbalance in the long run damages our arteries and increases the chances of heart attack to a great extent.
Smoking and consumption of harmful substances
Smoking cigarettes and vaping directly damage our arteries and increase the risk of blood clots.
Similarly, excessive caffeine and stimulants present in energy drinks can suddenly disturb the heart rhythm, especially in young people who already have a heart problem but are not aware of it.
Undiscovered health conditions and genetic causes
Many young people are unaware of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or genetic heart diseases. These 'silently' developing conditions can cause sudden cardiac arrest. Not getting regular health checkups is a big obstacle in detecting these problems.
Expert opinion
Experts have recently expressed concern over the increasing trend of heart attacks among young people.
They say that cases of heart attack are now being reported even in 25-year-olds. According to them, the main reasons behind this are increasing stress, unhealthy food, watching screens till late at night, high caffeine consumption, and lack of physical exercise.
Experts advise the youth to improve their lifestyle, exercise regularly, and take measures to reduce mental stress so that the risk of heart diseases can be avoided.
