Mumbai: Preparations are being made to change the name of another city in Maharashtra. Islampur in Sangli district can be renamed as Ishwarpur. The Devendra Fadnavis-led Mahayuti Government of the state has proposed to change the name of Islampur to Ishwarpur. There was a long-standing demand at the local level to change the name of this city, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The Maharashtra Government has announced on Friday that there is a proposal to change the name of Islampur in Sangli district to Ishwarpur. The announcement in this regard was made on the last day of the monsoon session in the state assembly.

State Government Send Name To Center For Approval

NCP leader of Ajit Pawar faction and minister in the State Government Chhagan Bhujbal told the assembly that a decision was taken to change the name in the cabinet meeting held on Thursday. While giving information, he also told that the state government will send this decision of the cabinet to the central government for approval.

This step was taken after the Hinduist organization Shiv Pratishthan sent a memorandum to the Sangli Collectorate demanding to change the name of Islampur to Ishwarpur. The president of Shiv Pratishthan is Sambhaji Bhide, whose supporters have said that they will not rest until this demand is met. A Shiv Sena leader from Islampur said that the demand for changing the name has been going on since 1986.

Central Government To Put Final Seal

The Hinduist organization Shiv Pratishthan had demanded that the name of Islampur be changed to Ishwarpur. Fadnavis government minister Chhagan Bhujbal has approved this demand on behalf of the Assembly. He said that he will send this proposal to the central government where the proposal will be given final approval. He said that this proposal will be fully accepted only after getting the approval of the central government.

Many names have been changed before this too

The Maharashtra government had changed the names of two cities last year. The first city was Aurangabad and the second was Osmanabad. The Maharashtra government changed the name of Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and the name of Osmanabad city to Dharashiv.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji was the elder son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who was later hanged by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. In October last year, the name of Ahmed district was changed to Punyashlok Ahilyadevi district.
