New Delhi: On the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh issued a veiled but firm message directed at Pakistan. Speaking at an event with the Indian diaspora in Germany, Singh warned that any attempt to destabilize India would be met with a decisive response.

Without naming Pakistan explicitly, he remarked that while India maintains cordial relations with most of its neighbours, “only one” continues to pose challenges.

Reference to Past Military Response

Singh referred to India’s earlier counter-terror operation, Operation Sindoor, stating that the country’s armed forces have already demonstrated their capability. He underscored that India does not initiate conflict but will respond firmly if provoked.

The defence minister’s comments come amid ongoing tensions and reflect New Delhi’s consistent stance on cross-border terrorism.

Remembering the Pahalgam Attack

The Pahalgam attack, which took place on April 22 last year in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, left 26 civilians dead after terrorists opened fire at close range. The incident had triggered nationwide outrage and led to a series of retaliatory measures by Indian forces.

In the days following the attack, India carried out targeted strikes on multiple terror launchpads across the border, followed by further military action against key installations.

India’s Growing Defence Strength

Highlighting the country’s evolving defence capabilities, Singh noted a significant shift from import dependence to domestic production and exports. He stated that India has now emerged as a defence exporter, with shipments reaching approximately ₹39,000 crore.

The emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing aligns with the government’s broader push to strengthen national security and reduce external dependence.

Context of Renewed Tensions

Singh’s remarks also come in the backdrop of recent statements by Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, which had drawn sharp reactions in India.

The exchange of rhetoric between the two sides highlights the fragile nature of regional security, even as India reiterates its position of restraint combined with preparedness.
