Anti-Paper Leak Bill: Parliament To Hold Debate At 2 PM

New Delhi: A stringent bill that hikes fines and punishment for those convicted of examination paper leaks is set to be debated in the Lok Sabha at 2 pm today, a day after it was introduced in the Lok Sabha yesterday amid protests by the opposition. Union Minister Jitendra Singh introduced this bill Public Examinations (prevention of Unfair leaks) Amendment Bill 2026 on Monday.

Both houses today adjourned to 2 pm, with the opposition protesting on the use of lethal force, including pellet guns on students. Speaker Om Birla announced that at the all-party informal meet, the Opposition decided to participate in the debate. However,  it was decided that the opposition would continue to protest on lathicharge.

From opposition side Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh  Yadav and many others would speak. There is a difference of opinion as to under which rule the subject is to be taken up. Sources said the Speaker would decide after consultations. Since more than 40 to 50 speakers are going to participate in the debate, the time frame for the debate may vary from 6 to 8 hours.

Sources said that the Opposition has already submitted 93 amendments to the Bill, setting the stage for a fiery debate against the backdrop of the student protests that forced Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.  Mostly young MPs are expected to participate in the debate.

Since there are reports of several exam paper leaks in non-BJP-ruled states, the political parties would indulge in a blame game and try to score over their rivals. Today, the BJP already protested at the Makar Dwar of Parliament, alleging paper leakages in Punjab and demanding the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's resignation.
