Dispur: On Monday, the Election Commission issued an order for a 'special revision' of the voter list in Assam. According to the Commission, this special process will be implemented with January 1st, 2026, as the qualifying date, and the final list will be published on February 10th, 2026.
The Election Commission has issued instructions to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam that this special revision will be a process intermediate between the normal annual revision and the 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR).
According to officials, this system can be considered an advanced version of the normal revision. This time, voter verification will be conducted by booth-level officers based on a pre-filled register instead of an enumeration form.
Door-to-door verification to begin on November 22nd
As per the schedule, door-to-door verification will continue from November 22nd to December 20th. Following this, the integrated draft roll will be released on December 27th, and the final voter list will be released on February 10th, 2026.
Last month, the Election Commission issued SIRs for several states across the country—such as Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bengal, and Union Territories. Elections are scheduled for many of these states in 2026. Elections in Assam are also scheduled for next year.
Why a separate order for Assam?
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stated that Assam has separate provisions related to citizenship, and the citizenship verification process is ongoing under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
Therefore, the nationwide SIR order of June 24th could not be applied to Assam. Therefore, a separate special revision has been arranged for Assam.
