Vegetable Prices Suddenly Doubled Across Markets
New Delhi: Delhi witnessed growing disruptions on Friday as the ongoing auto, taxi and transporters’ strike began impacting both daily commuters and wholesale markets across the capital. The strike, which entered its second day, has already led to a sharp rise in vegetable prices at major markets, including the city’s largest wholesale hub, Azadpur Mandi.
Traders at Azadpur Mandi reported steep increases in the prices of several vegetables and herbs due to limited supply. Coriander prices jumped dramatically from Rs 40 per kilogram to nearly Rs 100 per kilogram within a day. Ginger prices also increased and are now being sold between Rs 120 and Rs 130 per kilogram, compared to the earlier Rs 100 rate.
Lemons and mint have also become more expensive as fewer transport vehicles are reaching the wholesale market. Traders dealing in onions, potatoes and garlic said they are currently relying on existing stock as only around 20 trucks reportedly arrived in the mandi on Friday, far below the usual requirement for Delhi’s daily consumption.
Market experts warned that onion prices may also rise if supply disruptions continue over the next few days.
The strike also affected public movement in several busy parts of Delhi-NCR. Commuters reported long waiting times and limited transport availability near New Delhi Railway Station, Anand Vihar and Mandi House Metro Station.
Transport unions have opposed the Delhi government’s environmental compensation cess on commercial vehicles and demanded a revision in auto and taxi fares due to rising CNG, petrol and diesel prices. The three-day protest is scheduled to continue till May 23.
