New Delhi: The Lok Sabha witnessed sharp exchanges during the Budget Session 2026 after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a pointed attack on the Centre’s economic and foreign policy approach while participating in the debate on the Union Budget 2026–27.

“World Moving Towards Unstable Global Order”

Gandhi argued that the global balance of power is undergoing a major shift, with China, Russia and other nations challenging the dominance of the United States. He said the world is transitioning from a relatively stable superpower-led system to a more volatile and uncertain global order, requiring India to recalibrate its economic and strategic policies.

Dollar, Oil and Energy Finance as “Geopolitical Weapons”

Addressing the House, Gandhi said instruments such as the US dollar, crude oil and energy finance are increasingly being used as geopolitical tools. In such circumstances, he stressed, India must pursue a balanced and people-centric economic strategy. He also highlighted that India possesses one of the world’s largest data pools, which, if properly leveraged, could significantly strengthen the country’s economic position.

Allegations Against the Government Spark Protests

The Congress leader accused the government of framing policies that, in his view, favour select industrialists. He alleged that national assets were being handed over in a manner that does not serve broader public interest. His remarks, including references to prominent industrialists and the Prime Minister, triggered strong protests from treasury bench members, leading to brief disruptions in the House.

INDIA Bloc’s Approach and Focus on Farmers

Gandhi asserted that an INDIA coalition government would have handled negotiations with global powers, including the United States, differently. He emphasized that Indian farmers’ interests must remain paramount and said there should be no compromise on the country’s energy security.

Martial Arts Analogy Draws Attention

In a striking metaphor, Gandhi referred to martial arts, describing a sequence of “grip, choke and tap,” and likened it to political processes involving pressure, control and eventual surrender. The analogy prompted reactions and further debate across party lines.

Budget Debate Set to Intensify

With sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition, Gandhi’s speech added to the charged atmosphere of the ongoing Budget Session. As discussions on the Union Budget continue, political confrontation in Parliament is expected to escalate in the coming days.
