New Delhi: Most people only think about their eyes when vision becomes clearly blurry or discomfort gets hard to ignore. But eye specialists say the eyes can often reveal early warning signs of both eye diseases and broader health conditions affecting the body.
According to Dr K Subba Rao, Senior Cataract and Refractive Surgeon at Maxivision Sri Mahalakshmi Super Speciality Eye Hospitals, many patients delay treatment because early symptoms seem mild. “Several eye conditions begin with subtle signs like persistent redness, flashes, dryness, irritation, or visual discomfort. In some cases, eye changes may also reflect systemic issues such as diabetes or hypertension,” he explained.
Occasional blurriness can happen due to fatigue or long screen use. However, sudden or repeated episodes of blurred vision may indicate conditions such as diabetes, retinal disorders, or increased eye pressure that need medical attention.
Mild redness can be caused by dust, strain, or rubbing. But if redness persists for days or keeps returning, it could point to allergies, infection, or inflammation inside the eye.
Seeing floaters occasionally is common. But a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or dark spots may signal a retinal problem that requires urgent evaluation.
Eyes may feel tired after strain, but ongoing pain or soreness is not normal. It could indicate infection, inflammation, or even raised eye pressure that should be checked promptly.
Dry eyes are increasingly common due to prolonged screen exposure. However, continuous burning, grittiness, or dryness throughout the day may suggest chronic dry eye disease or other underlying issues beyond screen fatigue.
Trouble seeing at night often develops gradually and may go unnoticed at first. It can sometimes be linked to cataracts or retinal conditions that affect vision in dim lighting.
A yellow discoloration of the whites of the eyes should never be ignored. It may be a sign of jaundice or liver-related problems and requires immediate medical evaluation.
Dr Rao emphasizes that many of these symptoms start subtly and are often mistaken for stress, tiredness, or normal ageing. Early attention to such changes can help prevent complications and ensure timely treatment.
