New Delhi: Relief from the long spell of heat may finally be on the way for Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India. The India Meteorological Department has said that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into most parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab, along with some parts of Rajasthan, over the next two to three days.

In its latest update issued on June 30, the IMD said the monsoon has moved ahead into more parts of Madhya Pradesh, the remaining areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar, some parts of Uttar Pradesh, most parts of Uttarakhand and parts of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The Northern Limit of Monsoon is now passing through areas including Surat, Indore, Sagar, Sidhi, Azamgarh, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Dehradun and Mandi.

For Delhi-NCR, the weather office has forecast light to scattered rainfall around June 30 and July 1, followed by fairly widespread rain activity over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab from July 2 to July 6. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over the Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi region between July 1 and July 3. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds may accompany the showers during this period.

The IMD has also indicated that maximum temperatures over northwest India may fall by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius till July 2, bringing some relief from the hot and humid conditions. A low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal around July 3, which could keep monsoon activity strong over central India during the week.

Meanwhile, the weather department’s July outlook says rainfall across India as a whole is likely to remain below normal, though parts of northwest India may receive normal to above-normal rainfall. The IMD has also noted that weak El Nino conditions are currently prevailing over the equatorial Pacific Ocean and may strengthen further during the southwest monsoon season.
