New Delhi: At least two teenagers were killed and four others injured after a massive fire broke out at an e-charging station in the Shahdara area today on Sunday, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The incident occurred early in the morning at Moti Ram Road in Shahdara.
The Fire Department said that as soon as they received a call from the e-charging station on Sunday morning, five Fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire.
The fire completely destroyed an e-rickshaw charging and parking station housed in a tin shed, where sugarcane juice machines were also kept.
The police and fire department have shared the victims' ordeal and the full details of the rescue operation.
19-year-old Brijesh and 18-year-old Maniram of Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh were burnt to death. Both were sleeping at the time of the incident and got trapped inside the shed due to the fire. Their charred bodies were recovered from the debris after the fire was extinguished.
Four other teenagers—Harishankar (19), Rinku (18), Mukesh (22) and Vipin (19)—have been admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in critical condition. Harishankar suffered 45% burns on his body, Rinku 30%, while Mukesh and Vipin suffered about 7% burns.
The fire broke out around 6:40 am when the fire brigade was informed about it. Five fire brigade vehicles reached the spot and controlled the fire in about one and a half hours. Preliminary investigation has indicated that the fire broke out due to a short circuit during charging.
However, it has also come to light that basic fire safety arrangements were not present at the site of the incident.
The police have detained Vinod Rathore, the in-charge of the shed, who used to run this warehouse on rent. He is being questioned about safety standards and the presence of employees in the shed.
The police officer said, "Legal action is being taken. Information is being taken from Rathore about safety standards. Investigation has revealed that fire safety equipment was also not present in the shed."
