New Delhi: The crisis over cheap electricity in the capital, Delhi, now seems to be deepening. The Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) has rejected the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission's (DERC) demand for additional time to pay dues of about ₹30,000 crore. This decision can now have a direct impact on common consumers.

Case related to Supreme Court order

This entire matter is related to the order of the Supreme Court of India of August 2025, in which all the states were instructed to pay their old electricity dues by April 2026. DERC had sought an extension of this deadline so that there would be no sudden burden on the public, but APTEL strongly rejected this.

Why did the dues increase so much?

In Delhi, the rates were kept low to provide cheap electricity to the consumers, but on the other hand, the dues of the power companies kept increasing. This amount has now become so huge that paying it has become a big challenge.

Three big options before the government

Now the Delhi government is left with limited options:

• There should be a direct increase in electricity rates.
• The government itself will bear the burden by giving a subsidy.
• Or a mixed approach of both should be adopted.

Will electricity bills increase?

If the government does not increase the subsidy, then a huge increase in the electricity bills of homes and factories is considered almost certain. This may affect both the general public and the industry.

Now the decision is in the hands of the Delhi government and regulatory commission. It remains to be seen whether the government finds a balanced way to provide relief to the public or people will have to be prepared for expensive electricity bills.
