Health Secretary calls meeting over cough syrup deaths in Madhya Pradesh

New Delhi: Fourteen children died in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, after consuming Coldrif cough syrup.

The Central Government has taken action in the case of children's deaths due to this cough syrup. Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava will hold a meeting with the Chief Secretaries and Health Secretaries of all states at 4 pm today. This meeting will be conducted via video conferencing.

This incident has shaken the entire nation. The Madhya Pradesh government has taken action in this matter, and Chhindwara doctor Praveen Soni, who recommended the syrup, has been arrested.

The sale of the syrup has been banned in the state. Meanwhile, the Chhindwara Superintendent of Police (SP) stated that Dr. Praveen Soni has been charged based on the BMO's report, as he was the one who recommended the use of the medicine.

A case has been registered under these sections.
In the case of the death of 14 children in Chhindwara district after consuming Coldrif cough syrup, Superintendent of Police Ajay Pandey stated that a case has been registered under sections 105 (BNS), 276 (BNS), and 27 (A) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, based on the BMO's report. Dr. Praveen Soni treated the majority of the children in this case. He prescribed Coldrif syrup, and therefore, he has been named as an accused in the case.

Union Health Secretary's Meeting
Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava will hold a meeting with the Chief Secretaries and Health Secretaries of all states across the country. According to sources, the main objective of this online meeting is to discuss the rational use of cough syrup and ensure the quality of medicines following the deaths of several children linked to Coldrif cough syrup.

Directions may be issued against the company.
It is reported that the CDSCO will write to the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take strict action against the company. Sources claim that the CDSCO will write to the Tamil Nadu-FDA to take strict action against Srisan Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of 'Coldrif' syrup.

Several investigation reports are still pending.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the results of samples from Nectro DS, another cough syrup supplier in Madhya Pradesh, are still pending. It is reported that the results of the Nextro DS syrup samples are still pending. A total of 19 samples were collected, including samples of syrup, antibiotics, antipyretics, and ondansetron consumed by children who fell ill in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh.

Sales of Coldrif Banned in MP
It is noteworthy that the sale of Coldrif and Nextro DS syrups, as well as other products manufactured by the same company, has been immediately banned in Madhya Pradesh. State Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced this on the social media platform X.

The Health Ministry issued this advice.
It is noteworthy that the Union Health Ministry has advised against giving cough and cold medicines to children under two years of age. The Ministry has written to the Directors of Health Services of all states and union territories in this regard.

Coldrif cough syrup banned in these states as well.
Several children died after consuming this syrup in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. Following this, the syrup was banned in these states. As a precautionary measure, other states such as Kerala and Telangana have issued public alerts banning the syrup.
