CJI BR Gavai to review petition on stray dog
New Delhi: In a recent strict order Chief Justice of India (CJI) Gavai stated, 'I will look into it' in reference to a petition concerning stray dogs. The Chief Justice of India heard an urgent hearing on a case involving stray dogs on Wednesday.
In 2024 the petition was submitted on behalf of the Conference for Human Rights (India). It had challenged the Delhi High Court order refusing to entertain his PIL seeking directions for sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs in Delhi as per the Animal Birth Control (Dog) Rules. The court stated that it would take the petition into consideration when it was presented today.
Chief Justice BR Gavai responded that another bench had already issued an order regarding stray dogs when the attorney brought up the issue. He was referring to the bench led by Justice JB Pardiwalas August 11 ruling that stray dogs should be moved to Delhi shelters.
The lawyer then brought up a May 2024 ruling by a bench led by Justice JK Maheshwari which ordered the petitions pertaining to the stray dog issue to be sent to the appropriate high courts. The attorney cited the ruling made by Justice Maheshwari bench which stated, 'We simply wish to state that dogs cannot be killed arbitrarily in any situation.'

In accordance with current laws and their spirit the authorities must act. It is undeniable that compassion for all living things is a public sentiment and a constitutional ideal. The government is in charge of keeping them up to date. Then the Chief Justice Gavai said, 'I'll look into it.'
Earlier Supreme Court has taken a strong stand in response to the increasing number of stray dog attacks. The courts ordered Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and the entire NCR to capture stray dogs and place them in safe shelters.
The Delhi MCD and NDMC have been asked to start the drive immediately in order to remove the dogs from the roads and transport them to another location. Take action against those who obstruct the process. The Supreme Court issued a warning saying that any person or group that interferes with the process will face severe consequences. The court made it clear that nobodys feelings should be hurt during this campaign.
