New Delhi: Due to heavy rains and natural disasters in Jammu division, the gates of Baglihar and Salal dams built on Chenab river had to be opened, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
After this decision, the threat of flood in Pakistan seems to be deepening, as a large amount of water is being released from these dams.
Many areas including Ramban of Jammu and Kashmir have been receiving torrential rains for the last few days.
Due to rain, the water level of the reservoirs increased rapidly, due to which two gates of Baglihar Dam and three gates of Salal Dam had to be opened.
According to Dynamite News correspondent, incidents like cloudburst and landslides in Ramban district have made the situation even more serious.
Due to continuous rain, traffic on many roads has been disrupted and normal life has also been affected.
The administration and disaster management department are on alert mode and people living in low-lying areas have been alerted.
Important for power generation and water control
Salal Dam, which is located in Reasi district of Jammu, is a major hydro electric project. This dam supplies electricity to many other states besides Jammu and Kashmir.
Located about 23 km from the district headquarters of Reasi, this dam is built on the Chenab river. Baglihar Dam is also built on this river, which is important for power generation and water control.
Chenab river flow increased due to water
Due to the water released by opening the gates of the dam, the flow of Chenab river has increased, which has increased the possibility of floods in the lower areas of Pakistan.
Pakistan's Indus Water Commission has expressed concern over this situation. However, Indian officials say that this step has been taken keeping security in mind, so that the dam can be saved from damage.
The local administration is monitoring the situation and is constantly taking updates from the Meteorological Department.
The alert has been increased due to the possibility of more rain in the coming days. People living on the river bank have been advised to remain alert.
