Jammu: For the first time in the Swachh Bharat Mission, Jammu city has broken all previous records by achieving a two-digit ranking in the Swachh Survey. Jammu has got 42nd place in the category of cities with a population of 3 to 10 lakhs.

In the last Swachh Survey, Jammu was ranked 248th. The results of the Swachh Survey were announced on Thursday, in which Indore remained at the first position for the eighth time in a row. The city of temples, Jammu, was successful in getting a two-digit ranking for the first time. Jammu has been getting a three-digit ranking in the category of population of 3 lakh to 10 lakhs till now.

In the year 2019, Jammu city was at number 329 in this survey. Till last year, Jammu city was successful in getting 169th ranking in the year 2021. The result of strict implementation of online upload and other arrangements for cleanliness ranking under the cleanliness and rules of Corporation Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav is that for the first time Jammu Municipal Corporation was successful in getting a two-digit ranking for the city.

This survey revealed that 92 percent door-to-door garbage collection is being done in Jammu while 26 percent wet and dry garbage is being picked up separately from the source itself. Apart from this, 100 percent cleaning of residential areas and markets is being done.

At the same time, Jammu has been 71 percent successful in cleaning water sources. 80 percent cleanliness of public toilets has been recorded. Jammu city has been successful in improving 17 percent dumping sites. In view of all these arrangements, Jammu city was successful in being at number 42 this time.

Heaps of garbage remain a hindrance in improving the ranking
The efforts of Jammu Municipal Corporation regarding cleanliness have borne fruit, but the dumping sites built at various places in the city are still hampering the ranking. This is being confirmed by the 17 percent improvement in the dumping sites recorded in the Swachh Survey.

The situation is that even now the garbage coming out of the streets and localities in Jammu city is brought to a dumping site built at one place and then from there the garbage is transported to the Solid Waste Management Project site located at Kot Bhalwal. When the garbage from every house in the city starts going directly to the disposal site and there will be no dumping site, the ranking will improve further. Currently, there are around 18 dumping sites across the city.

There are more dumping sites especially in the old city and areas with narrow lanes, because big vehicles cannot reach there. Such dumping sites have been made in various areas of the city including Gandhinagar, Warehouse, Parade, Circular Road, Trikuta Nagar and Janipur.

Garbage segregation is also a major problem

Jammu Municipal Corporation has not yet been successful in collecting the garbage separately from wherever it is generated. Only about 26 percent of the people are separating wet and dry garbage. This has been revealed in the Swachh Survey. Although, Jammu Municipal Corporation has started the system of disposal of garbage separately in Bandhrukh and Bhagwati Nagar, but it is still very low at the level of citizens. Its loss is being faced in the Swachh Survey ranking. Most of the people collect all the garbage at one place and put it in the corporation's auto in the morning. However, the corporation has been trying to make people and traders aware for the past one year. Some shopkeepers and traders are doing this. Some people are also collecting garbage in two dustbins. The corporation claims that this time it will definitely cross 50 percent.
