New Delhi: The Central Government on Thursday formally notified the appointment of Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, a senior judge of the Allahabad High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. The appointment was announced by the Union Minister of Law and Justice through a post on social media.

Appointment Notified by Centre

The notification stated that the appointment has been made by the President of India, exercising powers under the Constitution, and after due consultation with the Chief Justice of India. Justice Gupta will assume office following the retirement of the current Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court.

Current Chief Justice to Retire on January 9

At present, Justice Guhanathan Narendar is serving as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. He assumed office on December 26, 2024, and is scheduled to retire on January 9, 2026, upon attaining the age of superannuation.

Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta will take charge of the post after Justice Narendar demits office, ensuring a smooth transition at the helm of the High Court.

Oath Ceremony on January 10

As per the official order, Justice Gupta is expected to take oath as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court on January 10, 2026, or shortly thereafter. Until then, Justice Narendar will continue to function as the Chief Justice.

Collegium Recommendation and Background

The Supreme Court Collegium had earlier recommended Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta for elevation as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. Justice Gupta is among the senior-most judges of the Allahabad High Court and brings extensive judicial experience to the role.

Official Statement from Law Minister

The Law Minister’s statement read: “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, Judge, Allahabad High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office, consequent upon the superannuation of Shri Justice Guhanathan Narendar.”

Transition at the High Court

With this appointment, the Uttarakhand High Court is set to witness a leadership change at the top, as Justice Gupta prepares to take over following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice.
