New Delhi: Amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, two major vessels carrying key energy supplies have arrived at New Mangalore Port, boosting India’s fuel reserves and supply chain preparedness.

According to officials, LPG tanker Pyxis Pioneer, carrying 16,714 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas from the United States, and oil tanker Aqua Titan, loaded with 96,099 tonnes of Russian crude, docked at the port on Sunday.

The Pyxis Pioneer, which departed from Port of Nederland on February 14, has begun discharging cooking gas at the facility. The arrival of these shipments comes at a crucial time, as global energy markets remain volatile due to geopolitical developments in the region.

India’s largest underground LPG storage facility

Officials highlighted that Mangaluru hosts India’s largest underground LPG storage facility, with a capacity of 80,000 tonnes. The facility became operational in September 2025 and plays a key role in strengthening the country’s strategic energy reserves.

In a move aimed at facilitating faster and cost-effective handling of essential energy supplies, port authorities have waived cargo-related charges for LPG and crude oil shipments from March 14 to March 31.
