The oath ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan in Dehradun
Dehradun: Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta has taken oath as the 15th Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. The ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan in Dehradun, where the Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh (Retd.), administered the oath of office and secrecy. The event was attended by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and several senior judges of the Uttarakhand High Court.
Justice Gupta succeeds Chief Justice Guhanathan Narendra, who retired on Friday. Prior to this appointment, he served as a senior judge at the Allahabad High Court.
Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta Recommended as Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta’s elevation to Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court on 18 December 2025. Following this, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued the official notification of his appointment on 8 January 2026. Justice Gupta’s tenure at the Uttarakhand High Court in Nainital will continue until 8 October 2026, the date of his retirement.

Justice Gupta was born on 9 October 1964. He earned his LLB degree from Lucknow University, Uttar Pradesh, in 1987, and registered as an advocate on 6 December 1987. During his legal practice, he primarily focused on civil, constitutional, and rent control matters, gaining expertise in complex legal issues.
Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on 12 April 2013 and became a permanent judge on 10 April 2015. Between 22 November 2023 and 4 February 2024, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. At the time of his elevation, he was the second senior-most judge at Allahabad High Court.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had announced that Justice Gupta’s appointment as Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court received the President’s approval. Justice Gupta has had a distinguished legal and judicial career, earning recognition for his expertise and service.
Alongside Justice Gupta’s appointment, advocate Siddharth Shah was sworn in as an Additional Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court. Administered by Chief Justice G. Narendra, his appointment brings the total number of judges in the court to ten.
