Monsoon Fury Across India: Red Alert In 14 States; Assam Flood Death Toll Rises To 78

India is witnessing intense monsoon activity, with the IMD issuing heavy rainfall alerts across 14 states. Meanwhile, floods in Assam have claimed 78 lives and affected more than three lakh people.

New Delhi: Heavy monsoon rains continue to batter large parts of India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue weather alerts across 14 states. While northern and central India brace for intense rainfall over the next 24 hours, Assam remains in the grip of severe flooding, with the death toll rising to 78.

IMD Warns of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

According to the IMD, widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is expected across several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Wind speeds of 40–60 kmph are likely in several areas, raising the risk of waterlogging, falling trees and disruption to transport. The active monsoon system, fuelled by moisture from the Bay of Bengal, is expected to remain effective until at least August 1.

Heavy Rainfall Alert for Uttar Pradesh

Several districts across eastern, central and western Uttar Pradesh have been placed under a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning. Cities such as Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Noida are expected to witness intense showers along with thunderstorms and lightning.

Authorities have been advised to remain on alert as some areas could record exceptionally high rainfall during the next 24 hours.

Assam Flood Situation Remains Critical

Flood conditions in Assam continue to worsen, affecting seven districts, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath and Kamrup Metro.

Official figures show that more than 3 lakh people have been affected, while 551 villages and 21 revenue circles remain inundated. Floodwaters have also damaged over 21,500 hectares of agricultural land. Three additional deaths were reported recently, taking the total fatalities to 78.

Advisory for Residents

The IMD has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Farmers, motorists and residents in low-lying areas have also been advised to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
