Dehradun: Torrential rains, cloudbursts and landslides have wreaked havoc across Dehradun district in Uttarakhand, cutting off hill-town Mussoorie and leaving tourists, patients and locals stranded. Roads have collapsed, bridges washed away, and many routes blocked.

As per the reports, hotels in Mussoorie have opened their doors for stranded guests free of charge in a gesture of solidarity.

13 people dead so far

A cloudburst in Sahastradhara during the early hours of Tuesday triggered flash floods in Dehradun. Several areas including Maldevta, Sahastradhara, and Premnagar faced severe damage. At least 13 people have been killed and 16 others are reported missing; the numbers are expected to change as rescue and relief operations proceed.
Road infrastructure has been badly hit: parts of the Dehradun-Mussoorie highway, Jharipani, Chunakhala, and Kimadi roads are blocked due to landslides. Bridges and culverts have collapsed. Embankments have been breached in several places. Patients needing urgent medical care have been stranded in Mussoorie because the road connection to Dehradun is cut.

CM Dhami monitoring the situation

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is monitoring the situation closely and has directed district administrations to remain on high alert. “Rescue teams are working on the ground. People living near rivers and streams are advised to move to safer places,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have also been briefed and assured of all necessary assistance.

Multiple rescue operations are underway by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and also from the Public Works Department (PWD).

Orange alert in the state

Several hotels, shops and bridges have been damaged by the monsoon fury prompting authorities to issue alerts across various parts in the state.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert for parts of Uttarakhand, along with a forecast for heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Sahastradhara, Maldevta, Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, DIT College area, Bhagat Singh Colony are among the areas that have been severely affected by the cloudburst.
