Monsoon Havoc: IMD warns of more heavy rain; Landslides & floods in several states

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recorded record rainfall in northwest India in the month of August, the highest since 2001. This month it received 265 mm of rain, which is 34.5 percent more than normal. The region has also received above normal rainfall in the three months of June to August, including 111 mm (42% more) in June and 237.4 mm (13% more) in July. Overall, 614.2 mm of rain was recorded from June 1 to August 31, which is about 27% more than normal.

Hilly States

In hilly states like Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, incidents of landslides and mountain cracks are increasing continuously due to heavy rains. At the same time, flood situation has arisen in plain areas like Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, affecting thousands of people and disrupting life. Punjab has witnessed the worst flood in decades, rivers and canals are in spate, and fields are flooded.

Heavy Rain Alert

The IMD has issued a heavy rain alert in seven states till September 2. Especially in Uttarakhand and eastern Rajasthan, continuous rain is expected for the next seven days. The department has also forecast above normal rainfall for September and said that the monsoon season may end with heavy rains and disasters this time.

IMD DG Mahapatra

IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra has warned that heavy rains in Uttarakhand can lead to landslides and flash floods, which can affect cities and towns in low-lying areas. Apart from this, normal life may also be affected in Delhi, South Haryana and North Rajasthan. There is also a risk of floods due to heavy rainfall in the upper parts of the Mahanadi river in Chhattisgarh.

IMD issues red alert in HP; Heavy rains predict in in many state

An average of 268.1 mm of rain was recorded across the country in August, which is 5 percent more than normal. A total of 743.1 mm of rainfall was recorded between June and August, which is about 6 percent more than normal. Due to the activation of Western Disturbance, southern peninsular India has also received more than normal rainfall. In view of this situation, the Meteorological Department has advised to remain alert.
