New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on January 24, 2026, made serious allegations against the BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI), claiming that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being used as a deliberate tool for “organised and strategic vote theft.”

According to Gandhi, the exercise, which is meant to update voter lists, has been transformed into a political weapon to undermine the constitutional principle of “one person, one vote.” He alleged that instead of voters deciding who forms the government, the process allows the BJP to shape election outcomes in advance.

SIR Turned Into a Political Weapon, Claims Gandhi

In a post shared in Hindi on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi said that wherever SIR has been implemented, there have been allegations of voter deletion and manipulation. He claimed that what is happening in Gujarat is not an administrative exercise but a carefully planned strategy to remove voters likely to support the Congress.

He alleged that voters from specific communities and booths were selectively targeted and deleted from the electoral rolls, particularly in areas where the BJP faced a strong challenge. According to him, voters were “made to disappear from the system” to influence election results.

Pattern Seen Across Multiple States

Rahul Gandhi claimed that this was not an isolated incident. He pointed to similar allegations in Aland and Rajura, stating that the same model is now being repeated in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other states where SIR has been carried out.

He described this as a “blueprint” for election manipulation, suggesting that the method is systematically replicated wherever elections are closely contested.

Allegations of Mass Objections and Rule Violations

Backing Gandhi’s claims, the Gujarat Congress alleged that after the Election Commission released the draft electoral roll following SIR, a sudden and suspicious surge of objections took place. While only a limited number of objections were filed initially, millions of Form 7 objections were allegedly submitted just days before the deadline.

According to the party, when 1.2 million objections were released, it became clear that rules were being violated. Multiple objections were reportedly filed under the same name with different signatures, allegedly targeting specific castes, communities, and regions.

Election Commission Under Fire

Rahul Gandhi made his strongest accusation against the Election Commission, claiming it had failed in its constitutional role. He alleged that the ECI had shifted from being a guardian of democracy to becoming an active participant in a conspiracy to undermine voting rights.

The Congress also claimed that when it sought official information about these objections, the Election Commission did not respond, reinforcing suspicions of bias and lack of accountability.

Political Impact and Growing Controversy

These allegations have intensified political tensions ahead of upcoming elections. While the BJP and Election Commission have not responded to all claims, the controversy has sparked a wider debate about electoral integrity, transparency, and the independence of democratic institutions in India.
