New Delhi: The Railways has announced the implementation of a new fare structure from 26 December, which will mean higher costs for long-distance passengers. This decision will directly impact passengers' pockets, although those traveling short distances have been given relief. The railways have justified this move as a way to manage operating costs and improve passenger amenities.

However, there will be no increase in fares for suburban trains and also for monthly season tickets. This is a big relief to lakhs of passengers who depend on local trains for daily travel.

Relief for Short-Distance Passengers

Indian Railways has clarified that passengers traveling up to 215 kilometers will be exempt from the fare increase. This means that daily commuters and those traveling short distances in urban areas will not face any additional burden. The impact will primarily be on long-distance travelers.

Increased Fares for Long-Distance Passengers

According to the railways' decision, long-distance journeys like Patna to Delhi will now cost slightly more. For example, the distance between Patna and Delhi is approximately 1000 kilometers. You will now have to pay Rs 10 more for traveling in Jan Sadharan Express, while the increase could be up to Rs 20 for faster trains like Sampoorna Kranti, Vande Bharat, and Rajdhani Express.

How much revenue will the railways generate?

The railways expect to generate approximately Rs 600 crore in additional revenue from this fare adjustment. This income will be used to manage the railways' operating costs and improve passenger amenities. This step has been taken with the aim of strengthening the financial health of the railways.

Impact of the New Rates

After the implementation of these new rates from December 26, ticket bookings will be processed accordingly. There will be no change in fares for those who have already made bookings, but all subsequent passengers will have to pay fares according to the new rates.

Officials said that this decision has been taken to manage rising fuel, maintenance, and operational costs, while still keeping train travel affordable for most people.
