New Delhi: Following the cancellation of Indigo and several other airlines' flights across the country, millions of passengers suddenly flocked to the railways.

In response to the increasing rush and high demand for tickets, the Indian Railways took immediate action. Starting December 6, 2025, the Railways implemented the decision to add additional coaches and run additional trips on several routes. This has brought significant relief to passengers.

The biggest impact of the flight cancellations was felt in South India, where the Railways made special preparations to increase capacity. Southern Railways added new coaches to 18 trains.

Additional seats were made available to passengers by increasing the number of sleeper and chair cars on several popular routes. This has restored travel to cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Northern Railways decongested the Delhi route

Due to the highest number of passengers traveling to and from Delhi, Northern Railways added additional AC and chair cars to eight main trains. This change has been implemented with immediate effect. This is providing special relief to passengers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

Western Railway's major initiative on the Delhi-Mumbai route

Flight cancellations had made travel between Delhi and Mumbai extremely difficult. In response, Western Railway has added 3AC and 2AC coaches to four major trains. Since the new arrangement came into effect on December 6th, thousands of passengers have found seats on this busy route.

Relief also on the Bihar-Delhi route, ECR increases AC seats

East Central Railway has taken special steps for passengers traveling from Patna to Delhi. Five additional trips are being run on the Rajendra Nagar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express from December 6th to 10th. The number of 2AC coaches on the train has also been increased, which has significantly reduced the seating pressure on the Patna-Delhi route.

East Coast, Eastern, and NFR also increased capacity

For passengers traveling from Odisha to Delhi, the East Coast Railway added 2AC coaches to trains 20817, 20811, and 20823 on five trips. Meanwhile, the Eastern Railway added sleeper coaches to three main trains on December 7 and 8. For passengers from the Northeast, the Northeast Frontier Railway significantly increased the number of 3AC and sleeper seats with eight additional trips each between December 6 and 13.

Railways also operated four special trains

To evacuate stranded passengers and facilitate long-distance travel, the Railways operated four special trains. These include the Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Special, the New Delhi–Mumbai Central Special, the Vande Bharat Special for the New Delhi–Srinagar region, and the Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram Special. Many trains were one-way, intended solely to provide relief to passengers.

Why was this decision by the Railways necessary?

The sudden surge in demand for tickets following flight cancellations caused distress in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Patna. This move by the Railways proved crucial, as the availability of thousands of additional seats provided a safe option for travelers.
