      Waqf Amendment Act 2025: Apex court limits powers of district collector

      The Supreme Court on Monday limited the powers of district collectors under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, ruling that executive authorities cannot be permitted to decide property rights. While refusing to stay the Act entirely, the court put on hold provisions that allowed government officers to determine whether Waqf properties had encroached on state land. The bench, led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice A.G. Masih noted that such provisions risk undermining the independence of Waqf boards and interfering with the rights of beneficiaries.

      Petitioners challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, on Monday expressed their relief after the Supreme Court stayed certain provisions of the law while allowing the rest to remain in force.       Karki govt to give 'Balidani' status to Gen-Z who lost their lives during protests

      Nepal Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday announced that those killed during the Gen-Z protests would be declared 'Balidani' and their families would be given an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh Nepali.

      Also said that those involved in violence and destruction across the country during last week's anti-government protests would be brought to justice.

      73-year-old Karki took over as PM at the newly built Home Ministry building at Singh Durbar Secretariat in Kathmandu at around 11 am.
