Weather conditions across India have changed sharply as snowfall continues in hilly regions and rainfall affects the plains. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand witnessed fresh snowfall, while rain brought down temperatures in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi.
Fresh Snowfall in J&K, Rainfall Lowers Temperatures Across North India
New Delhi: Following Friday's rains in northern India, the cold has returned. Snowfall and rain have begun in the mountainous regions, which had experienced a prolonged dry spell. This has led to a sharp drop in temperatures. This change in weather has brought relief to farmers and has also brought smiles to tourists planning to visit Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Fresh snowfall has been observed in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed as a precautionary measure due to heavy snowfall. The pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine located on the Trikuta Hills has also been temporarily suspended. Skiing enthusiasts are excited by the snowfall of over two feet in Gulmarg. Sonamarg recorded over six inches of snow, and Pahalgam recorded nearly three inches. Moderate to heavy snowfall has also occurred in Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Shopian, Pulwama, and Bandipora districts.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Uttar Pradesh may experience some relief from rain on Saturday, but this relief will not last long. Rain and thunderstorm alerts have been issued for several districts on January 25th and 26th. Rain may resume again in many parts of the state from January 27th. Drizzle and strong winds are expected in Ayodhya, Basti, Sitapur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Hardoi, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj.
The weather has also changed in Rajasthan. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for thunderstorms, strong winds, and hailstorms in several districts. Additionally, a warning has been issued for dense fog and a cold wave starting January 25th. Intermittent rain and strong winds have increased the cold.
According to the Meteorological Department, thunderstorms and rain will continue in various parts of the country for the next five days. Heavy snowfall warnings have been issued for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir. Rain is also expected in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and Ladakh.
Rain is not expected in Delhi on January 24, but the cold will persist. The maximum temperature in the capital is expected to be around 17 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 5 degrees Celsius. Strong winds with speeds of 55 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected in many states during this period.
