New Delhi: The protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar entered a new phase on Saturday after JNU PhD scholar Neha Bora announced that she would continue her indefinite hunger strike despite climate activist Sonam Wangchuk being shifted to Safdarjung Hospital earlier in the day.

Neha, who has completed 21 days of fasting, alleged that Delhi Police attempted to remove other hunger strikers after taking Wangchuk away from the protest site. She claimed that plain clothes personnel entered the stage area early in the morning, followed by a heavy police deployment.

Neha Bora Alleges Attempt to Detain Protesters

Speaking to the media, Bora alleged that after Wangchuk was taken away for medical treatment, police personnel tried to enter the designated protest area and detain students who were continuing the fast.

According to her, volunteers present at the site formed a protective barrier, preventing the remaining hunger strikers from being removed. She described the alleged police action as an attempt to disrupt a peaceful and democratic protest.

Bora also appealed to supporters to gather at Jantar Mantar, saying the movement would continue until their demands were addressed.

Delhi Police Cite Medical Advice and High Court Directions

Delhi Police rejected allegations of using force against protesters. In an official statement, the New Delhi district police said Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital following expert medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.

Police said Wangchuk's health had deteriorated due to his prolonged hunger strike and that some protesters created brief obstruction during the transfer, leading to a minor commotion. However, authorities maintained that the operation was carried out with maximum restraint and denied reports of any lathi-charge.

Students Form Human Chain at Protest Site

Following Wangchuk's hospitalisation, student protesters formed a human chain around the remaining hunger strikers to prevent any further removals. CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said Neha Bora, along with fellow protesters Aameen and Manish, would continue their indefinite fast.

Earlier, the All India Students' Association (AISA) had claimed that Bora's blood sugar level had dropped to a critically low level and doctors had advised her to end the fast and seek hospitalisation.
