New Delhi: A ground collision between two aircraft at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday resulted in damage to both planes when a SpiceJet aircraft, while taxiing, struck a stationary Akasa Air plane.
Officials said the incident occurred on the taxiway, where the wings of the two aircraft came into contact, forcing both to be grounded for inspection.
According to initial reports, the incident involved a SpiceJet Boeing 737-700 that was maneuvering on the taxiway when its right winglet struck the horizontal stabilizer of another aircraft parked nearby. The impact caused visible damage to both aircraft; however, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew, bringing significant relief to authorities.
Following the incident, the affected aircraft was immediately withdrawn from service and grounded at the airport. Officials from the airport authority and the airline promptly reached the site to assess the situation and ensure safety protocols were strictly followed. Flight operations at the airport continued under close monitoring to prevent any further disruptions.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the mishap. While early indications suggest a possible technical or ground-handling error during taxiing, officials have not ruled out negligence. A detailed probe is underway, and findings will be released once the inquiry is complete.
