Top Court retains dogs removal order near schools and hospitals
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday refused to modify its November 7, 2025 directions ordering the removal of stray dogs from institutional areas such as schools, hospitals and educational campuses. The court also retained its earlier direction that dogs picked up from these locations should not be released back into the same areas.
A three-judge Bench led by Justice Vikram Nath, along with Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria, delivered the verdict in the suo motu matter.
While pronouncing the judgment, the Bench stated, “We have dismissed all applications with reasons.” The court further noted that it had addressed issues related to accountability and tortious liability concerning street dog management.
The Bench rejected petitions challenging the standard operating procedure issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India regarding stray dog management and relocation.
The Supreme Court’s order comes amid growing concerns over stray dog attacks and public safety around schools, hospitals and residential areas. The court emphasized the need for proper accountability mechanisms while balancing animal welfare concerns.
The ruling is expected to have a significant impact on how local authorities and civic bodies manage stray dog populations in sensitive public areas across the country.
